Nicaragua, Volcan Grande is a very clean and sweet coffee.

Big notes of Chocolate, Walnut and Peaches.

Syrupy body and juicy aciditywith a lingering sweet chocolate finish.

The farmers behind Volcán Grande are a mix of long-time partners in the region and new farmers who have joined our Coffee Grower's Education Program (PECA). As we have expanded in the Jinotega department, we’ve welcomed more coffee farmers from nearby areas into the Volcán Grande community group. This growth has increased the volume available while maintaining the quality and profile of the coffee. Many of these farmers have been supplying coffee for more than six harvests, and a few farms are currently Rainforest Alliance (RFA) certified.

When CARAVELA established the second buying and drying station in La Concordia in 2015, farmers were initially hesitant because the Caravela model was new to the country. After some trial and error, and working closely with them over the years to build trust, learn their stories, identify qualities, and find ways to collaborate, we strengthened our relationships. Since then, the group has continued to grow.

Because the farms are medium-sized, averaging 20 to 30 hectares, along with some small farms of less than 5 hectares, the support and technical advice we provide is highly personalized. The medium-sized farms have good infrastructure for processing coffee and maintain large, organized plantations by variety. As a result, they can consistently deliver larger volumes of high-quality coffee, from RTB to AA grades. Farmers grow a range of traditional, hybrid, and exotic varieties, with the following distribution: 60% Catuai, 30% Caturra, 3% Catimor, 2% Parainema, 3% Maracaturra, and 2% Maragogipe. Depending on the elevation and humid climate, the coffee is grown either with or without shade.

WE develop the beans to a medium roast level achieving maximum balance of sugars and Caramel and an incredible velvety body. Behind the toffee and chocolate notes you can also pick walnut and stone fruit flavours. This is one of the Roaster's favourite coffee.

  • Volcán Grande is a coffee-growing community comprised of medium and small-scale farmers located within the impressive Datanlí-El Diablo Nature Reserve in the department of Jinotega. This region is home to many coffee-producing communities such as Volcán Grande, Los Milagros, El Salto, La Laguna, Arenales, and Palo Blanco. Some of the farmers behind this blend initially delivered coffee through the La Trampa community group, but as we have grown and expanded our reach, the group has welcomed more farmers. Today, the group is known as Volcán Grande, named after the second-highest mountain in the protected area, which reaches an altitude of 4,551 feet. The mountain gets its name from the internal rumbles it produces during storms. It is believed that a river of groundwater flows beneath the mountain, connecting to the hydrographic basin of the department, making it a crucial area for the ecosystem.

This department is also a unique region with microclimates perfect for growing specialty coffee. The agroecosystems are rich with exotic animals and forests. While coffee is the primary source of income for producers in the area, Jinotega is also known for growing other crops such as potatoes, tomatoes, cabbage, carrots, and grains. Local history tells that many years ago, communities in the area grew due to the migration of country dwellers from the Caribbean coast, who sought better agricultural opportunities. They embarked on long journeys through various communities in Matagalpa and Jinotega, and some, captivated by the beauty and agricultural potential of this special place, decided to settle here.
